Plantation & Commercial Crops

Plantation crops are crops grown on large estates or plantations mainly for commercial purposes. These crops usually have a long life span, require more care, and are cultivated in specific climatic conditions. Common plantation crops include tea, coffee, rubber, coconut, cocoa, and oil palm. They are mostly grown in tropical and subtropical regions with high rainfall and humidity. Plantation crops need well-drained, fertile soils, warm temperatures, and adequate rainfall throughout the year.

Coffee

Coffee (Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora) is an important plantation crop grown mainly for its seeds, known as coffee beans, which are used to prepare beverages. It is widely cultivated in tropical regions, especially in hilly areas.

Coffee grows best in a warm and humid climate with temperatures between 15–28°C and well-distributed rainfall of 1500–2500 mm. It requires well-drained, fertile loamy soils rich in organic matter and grows well under shade, often intercropped with shade trees.

Tea

Tea (Camellia sinensis) is an important plantation crop grown mainly for its tender leaves, which are processed to make tea, one of the most popular beverages in the world. It is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions, especially in hilly areas.

Tea grows best in a cool and humid climate with temperatures between 15–30°C and well-distributed rainfall of 1500–3000 mm. It requires well-drained, acidic soils rich in organic matter and thrives in regions with mist and cloud cover.

SugarCane

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) is an important commercial plantation crop grown mainly for the production of sugar, jaggery, and ethanol. It is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions due to its high sugar content.

Sugarcane grows best in well-drained fertile loamy soils with a pH of 6.0–7.5. It requires a warm and humid climate with temperatures between 20–35°C and annual rainfall of 1000–1500 mm, though it can also be grown under irrigation in drier areas.

Cotton

Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is an important fiber and cash crop grown mainly for its soft, fluffy fibers, which are used in the textile industry. It is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions.

Cotton grows best in well-drained loamy or black soils with good fertility and a pH of 6.0–7.5. It requires a warm climate, with temperatures between 21–30°C and moderate rainfall of 600–1200 mm. The crop is sensitive to frost and waterlogging.
