Red Gram

Red gram (pigeon pea) is an important pulse crop widely grown in tropical and subtropical regions, valued for its high protein content and its role in improving soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. It is mainly cultivated as a rainfed crop and is well suited to warm climates with temperatures ranging from 18–35°C. Red gram grows best in well-drained loamy or sandy loam soils with good aeration and a pH between 5.0 and 7.5. The crop requires moderate rainfall of about 60–100 cm and is tolerant to drought, though waterlogging can severely affect its growth. Red gram has a deep root system, which helps it withstand dry conditions, and it benefits from timely sowing, proper spacing, and balanced nutrient management for optimal yield.
